Understanding MVRV Z-Score: The MVRV Z-Score uses blockchain analysis to identify periods where Bitcoin is extremely over or undervalued relative to its 'fair value'. When market value is significantly higher than realized value, the Z-Score enters the red zone (>7), historically marking major tops. When the Z-Score is negative (<-0.5), it indicates extreme undervaluation and has marked major bottoms. The metric was created by @aweandwonder, building on MVRV work by Murad Mahmudov and David Puell.

Trading Strategy: Use MVRV Z-Score as a contrarian indicator for long-term positioning. Z-Score > 7 suggests taking profits or reducing exposure as the market is in extreme euphoria. Z-Score < -0.5 suggests accumulating as the market is in extreme fear. The 0-3 range represents fair value where the market is neither overheated nor oversold. Combine with other on-chain metrics like NUPL, Reserve Risk, and Realized Price for confirmation.

Cycle Timing: Highly accurate for identifying market tops and bottoms

Understanding MVRV Z-Score

The MVRV Z-Score is a powerful on-chain metric that uses blockchain analysis to identify periods where Bitcoin is extremely over or undervalued relative to its "fair value". It measures how far the current market price deviates from the realized price (aggregate cost basis), normalized by standard deviation.

The Z-Score is calculated as: (Market Price - Realized Price) / Standard Deviation of Market Price. When this value is very high (>7), it indicates the market is in extreme euphoria with price far above fair value. When very low (<-0.5), it indicates extreme fear with price far below fair value.

Historically, the MVRV Z-Score has been remarkably accurate at identifying major market cycle tops and bottoms. Every major Bitcoin bull market peak has occurred when the Z-Score exceeded 7 (pink zone), while major bear market bottoms have formed when the Z-Score dropped below -0.5 (purple zone).

Key Features:

  • Real-time Z-Score: Current Z-Score value with color-coded classification from Extreme Value to Extreme Euphoria.
  • Historical Chart: Visualize how the Z-Score has evolved across multiple market cycles since 2010.
  • Six Signal Zones: Color-coded zones from Extreme Value (purple) to Extreme Euphoria (red) for easy interpretation.
  • Statistical Foundation: Based on standard deviation analysis, providing statistically significant signals.

How to Use MVRV Z-Score

For Selling Strategy:

When Z-Score exceeds 7 (Extreme Euphoria zone), the market is historically overheated. This has marked every major cycle top (Dec 2013, Dec 2017, Apr 2021). Take profits, reduce exposure, or tighten stop losses significantly.

For Buying Strategy:

When Z-Score drops below -0.5 (Extreme Value zone), the market is historically undervalued. This has marked major bottoms (Jan 2015, Dec 2018, Mar 2020). Accumulate aggressively or increase position size.

For Risk Management:

Use Z-Score to adjust portfolio allocation: 100% exposure at Z < 0, scale down to 50% at Z = 3-5, and minimal exposure at Z > 7. Higher Z-Score = higher risk of correction.

For Trend Confirmation:

Rising Z-Score (0→3→5→7) confirms strengthening bull market. Falling Z-Score (7→3→0→negative) confirms bear market. Use for macro trend validation.

Pro Tips:

  • Z-Score > 7 has marked every major cycle top since 2011
  • Z-Score < -0.5 has marked every major cycle bottom
  • The 0-3 range represents fair value - neither overbought nor oversold
  • Extreme readings can persist for weeks - wait for confirmation
  • Combine with Pi Cycle Top, NUPL, and Reserve Risk for best results
  • Works best on logarithmic timescales (multi-year view)
  • More reliable for long-term positioning than short-term trading
  • Consider taking partial profits as Z-Score rises above 5

Calculation & Methodology

MVRV Z-Score = (Market Price - Realized Price) / Standard Deviation of Market Price. Market Price is the current spot price. Realized Price is the average price at which all coins last moved on-chain (approximated using exponentially weighted moving average). Standard Deviation is calculated over a rolling 365-day window. The resulting Z-Score shows how many standard deviations the market price is from realized price, providing a statistically normalized measure of over/undervaluation.
